What is it about the Czech Republic that seems to attract some of the world’s most beautiful, old-world castles? I have no idea, but this country is the place for stunning castle sighting. All of the sites mentioned are within three hours of each other, and one comes with a pretty sweet view.
With that said, here are 5 incredible castles in the Czech Republic. Off we go!
5 Incredible Castles in the Czech Republic
Prague Castle, Prague
I couldn’t compile a list of incredible castles in the Czech Republic without including the obvious; Prague Castle. Whether viewed from a distance or via a walk through the castle quarter, Prague Castle is a visual treat. Take a stroll through the Wallenstein Gardens, marvel at St. Vitus Cathedral and listen closely for the sounds of the Singing Fountain.
Špilberk Castle, Brno
Špilberk Castle in Brno, about three hours from Prague, is a decidedly different tone. This castle was a former fortress used to house prisoners within its underground tunnels. You can tour it all, by the way. Just don’t go in expecting a romantic scene.
State Castle, Český Krumlov
The State Castle of Český Krumlov is whimsical and fantastic. Seated in the middle of the fairytale land of Český Krumlov, the State Castle looks like something out of a storybook. If you climb the Castle Tower, you’re guaranteed the best view of this beautiful little town.
(Oh, and keep an eye out for the bear moat. No, I’m not kidding.)
Karlštejn Castle, Karlštejn
Karlštejn Castle is just about the perfect embodiment of history come to life. An old castle that housed the Czech Republic’s favorite King, situated at the top of a hill, surrounded by forests. Walking through the castle grounds, you can practically envision King Charles IV ruling his adoring populace. It really takes you back in time.
Valdštejn Castle in Český Ráj
Český Ráj translates to “Bohemian Paradise” and nothing describes it better. I saved Valdštejn Castle for last on this list of incredible castles in the Czech Republic, because everything about is breathtaking.
The setting? A clifftop palace with views in all directions of the stunning Český Ráj national park. The castle? Medieval in design and feel. Valdštejn Castle welcomes you in with a large cobblestone bridge with statues of famous Czechs. Wander around the courtyard, which hosts a stunning chapel and pub. Venture a bit further and you’ll find the castle’s real treasure; a host of medieval ruins with the views to match. If you’re going to visit any castle in the Czech Republic, make it this one.
